Our week in pictures!

SUNDAY
Dr. Barbara Ballard opened the 75th session of Sunflower Girls State with her keynote address about women in leadership roles. Dr. Ballard is always a delegate favorite!

MONDAY
Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins spoke with the delegates following a career panel. She spoke about her day to day work responsibilities and the importance of being involved. The delegates were also given a lesson on flag etiquette and meaning of the flag by members of the American Legion Post #14 of Lawrence.

Staters were taught how to file a petition to run for government position. Petitions signing followed for both political parties at the county and state level.

TUESDAY
Primary elections took place Tuesday morning with winner announced in the afternoon! We had several guest speakers including Kansas Court of Appeals Judge, Judge Pierron. Judge Pierron spoke to the delegates about the Supreme Court and the Kansas Court of Appeals.

State Officer Candidates planned and preformed Whistle Stops for Each Girls State County!

What to Wear at Sunflower Girls State

At American Legion Auxiliary Sunflower Girls State we follow a business casual dress code. The dress code is stated in the delegate packet, but it can be confusing to some! Items that are appropriate to wear are dresses, skirts, and dress pants. Remember when deciding what to pack that skirts and dresses need to be and appropriate length!  The buildings we use tend to be chilly, so remembering to bring a cardigan might be a good idea for some!

There are a few things that are not acceptable to wear while at Girls State, such as denim jeans or leggings as pants. Please avoid spaghetti strap tops and dresses unless something is worn over the top. Please no crop tops or rompers! They may look great on you but they won’t work here!

During activity time delegates may wear jeans or running shorts, but remember to never go barefoot! During the week, delegates will have an opportunity to visit the Girls State Boutique! The shirts bought from the boutique are allowed to be worn during session!

We want this week to be fun and educational, if at any point you have a question about something you want to wear ask a staff member. We are here to benefit you!
