Since 1939, we have led the effort to:

  • educate our youth in the duties, privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship

  • give future citizens, in a realistic manner, an opportunity to learn the problems of government by performing the same duties as real office holders in every day offices and positions

  • inform them of the rights and privileges of American citizenship

  • instill a deep sense of the personal responsibilities and obligations which this citizenship entails

OUR WEEK AT A GLANCE:

WHY ATTEND ALA SUNFLOWER GIRLS STATE?

Delegates attending Sunflower Girls State experience governmental procedure by simulating political campaigns, elections, and the political process. They also learn about the principles of citizenship, and public service from guest speakers, elected officials, expert panels, and experienced counselors.

American Legion Auxiliary

Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Sunflower Girls State was founded in 1939. Girls State is held in all 50 states and nationally recognized by colleges and universities.

College scholarships are awarded each year to three delegates who attend Sunflower Girls State.
